Thank you for taking the time to participate in this 15- 20 minute survey exploring the root causes of falls from heights.

Why are we conducting this survey?

Every year the HSE publishes data on the rates of fatal and non-fatal falls reported under RIDDOR as well as the estimated statistics collected on non-fatal falls by the Labour Force Survey. However, good qualitative information on the underlying causes and circumstances surrounding falls from height is not currently available.

The No Falls Foundation is conducting this survey in an effort to establish more detailed information about incidents involving falls from height and to explore the root causes of falls. The results of this survey will be used to inform the No Falls Foundation as to where its resources are best focused, as well as guide the efforts of others working to improve work at height safety for workers across all industries, helping to ensure everyone who works at height comes down safely.

The UK falls from height research study was inspired by CPWR’s Fall experience survey and developed with their support.

Why is this important?

Falls from height are consistently the most common cause of workplace fatalities accounting for 36% of all deaths in the workplace last year, when 50 people tragically lost their lives. Falls from height also cause thousands upon thousands of life-changing injuries every year. It’s estimated by the Labour Force Survey that over the last ten years up to 425,000 people have suffered a fall from height at work.

What is the No Falls Foundation?

The No Falls Foundation is a UK charity dedicated to the work at height sector. The No Falls Foundation’s main objectives are preventing falls from height through education and research as well as supporting people who have experienced the often devastating consequences of a fall from height.

What will the information be used for?

As part of the survey, you will be asked to provide information about a fall from height incident you have experienced, witnessed, or investigated.

Your participation in this survey is completely voluntary and your responses are collected anonymously. At the end of the survey you will be given the option to provide your name and contact information should you wish to provide further details about your experience. No identifying information will be linked to your original fall experience survey response.

Information provided in this survey will be used to identify the underlying causes of falls from height. The results will be published, but individual responses will not be published.
