Webinar Description
This webinar will provide law enforcement and prosecution agencies with the tools and resources needed to enhance language access. NIWAP and the Asian Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence will present resources, language access tools, and technical assistance for developing, complying with, and implementing language access plans, as well as interpreting for victims with limited English proficiency. Participants will learn from the Federal Coordination and Compliance Section (FCS) of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division about its Law Enforcement Language Access Initiative, a nationwide effort to provide law enforcement agencies with the technical assistance, resources and tools they need to ensure that individuals with limited English proficiency have effective and meaningful language access to law enforcement agency services.
The webinar will also feature insights from the Denver Police Department and Portland Police Bureau, highlighting best practices for serving Limited English Proficient communities and discussing their innovative approaches that provide a roadmap for improving language access programs at law enforcement agencies.
Importantly attendees will hear from state and federal funders (e.g. STOP, VOCA, OJP, BJA and OVW) who will discuss funding opportunities to support language access initiatives, including guidance on funding available, tips, tools and the application process.
