The Columbus Housing Improvement Program (CHIP) provides no-cost home repairs to eligible homeowners in Columbus, Indiana, ensuring long-term sustainability and safety of housing stock.

The Columbus Housing Improvement Program (CHIP) provides no-cost home repairs to eligible homeowners in Columbus, Indiana, ensuring long-term sustainability and safety of housing stock.
Program Details:
- Maximum assistance per home: $20,000
- Covers specific essential repairs: new roof, HVAC replacement, external entry ADA modifications, water heater replacement, and radon mitigation.
- Funded homeowners must reside in the home for at least 36 months to avoid reimbursing the program for repairs made.
- Contractors will be chosen by the program administrator using a competitive bid process.
- All homes will have an inspector evaluate the home after an application has been accepted for the program in order to scope potential improvements.
- The program administrators, in conjunction with the inspector, decide which repairs are viable and how best to allocate funds for each home.
- The inspector will also inspect any improvements made under the program to ensure they align with the bidded work.
Eligibility Criteria:
Household Income: Must be at or below 120% of the Area Median Income (AMI) for Columbus, Indiana, which is figured according to:

Applicant must:
- Live within Columbus city limits.
- Own the home and have home insurance.
- Not live in a floodplain as defined by this map.
- Applicant must agree to live in the home for at least 36 months after improvements. A lien will secure this agreement and if you choose to sell during that time you will have a prorated amount recovered during the sale closing process.
Important Notes:
- Priority for the program will be given to those who are disabled, veterans, seniors (age 50+), single mothers, and those with the lowest incomes.
- Applications are scored based on eligibility criteria, and for any ties or cut offs, funding will be awarded in order of application date.
- In order to be considered all required documentation must be included with application.
