With the expanding role of anesthesiologists in pain management, intensive care medicine and other areas, which one of the following statements do you most agree with?
Anesthesiology residency training should be expanded to four years beyond internship.
The internship year (PGY-0) should be modified to partially satisfy some of the non-OR ACGME requirements (e.g. ICU and pain management experience) in order to keep post-internship anesthesiology training to the current three years.
Anesthesiology residency training can easily accommodate these expanded ACGME mandated non-OR training requirements as is.
To preserve OR time during residency, experience in non-OR topics should be reduced from the current ACGME mandates. This change recognizes the increasing need for fellowship training in areas like ICU or pain management in order to be competitive in those non-OR job markets.
