PEO Practice Guidelines on Reviewing and Supervising Engineering Work

PEO is currently reviewing two of its practice guidelines around Reviewing and Supervising Engineering Work. We would like to ask your assistance in completing our survey by October 23, 2024.

The purpose of this guideline is to provide best practices for engineers who assume responsibility for work within the practice of professional engineering performed by unlicensed persons; and personally supervise and direct the provision of services within the practice of professional engineering.

This guideline provides professional engineers with guidance on how to conduct reviews of work prepared by other practitioners in a professionally acceptable manner.
Please review these guidelines and share your thoughts as they relate to the following questions.

Thank you in advance for contributing to the PEO guidelines.
1.How relevant is reviewing work prepared by another professional engineer in your industry?
2.In what situations (e.g. legacy files, peer review, technical reviews, legal disputes, etc.) does reviewing work prepared by another professional engineer typically occur?
3.What professional challenges and opportunities does the act of reviewing work by others (professional engineers or unlicensed staff) present?
4.Do you feel your role is more of a manager who provides guidance, direction, and counsel, and does not assume responsibility for their engineering work?
5.What professional challenges and opportunities exist when supervising others and assuming responsibility for their work? (e.g. multiple subordinates, lack of competence, multi-disciplinary projects, conflicts of interest, industry practices, etc.)
6.What competencies (knowledge and skills) are needed for professional engineers to review and/or supervise others’ work ?
7.Should the Assuming Responsibility and Supervising Engineering Work and Professional Engineers Reviewing Work Prepared by Another Professional Engineer guidelines be amalgamated into a single guideline?
