Gallatin Watershed Stewards Business Pledge

Form Information

Thank you for taking the next step to becoming a Gallatin Watershed Steward Business. Aside from a few required activities, you (the business) can decide which and how many stewardship activities you wish to engage in.

Every business is unique. If you find that this checklist does not apply to you, contact us and we’ll come up with a custom checklist.

If your business has not already filled out the GWS for Business application, please do so HERE.  After you fill out the application, GWC will send you a Business Partner Agreement for your business to sign.
1.Has your business filled out our GWS for Business Application?

*Make water conservation a part of your business strategic vision and business plan.
* In the same way that you may attribute importance to local foods, consider the importance of your “water footprint”. Understand your water flow and where it comes from in our watershed. Monitor water use, establish a baseline and look for fluctuations or spikes that indicate wasteful use. Dropcountr, a free water use tracker offered by the City of Bozeman, is a great place to start on your water-conscious journey. Also check out GWC's resources page.

Schedule a site visit with City of Bozeman Water Conservation staff to receive a water efficiency fixture inventory, recommendations on rebates and a customized ROI spreadsheet.
Schedule a free sprinkler system assessment visit with City of Bozeman Water Conservation staff to help identify needs of system repair and receive a customized watering schedule for your property. The City also offers free DIY assessment kits!
Only serve water upon request. Specifically in the restaurant industry, it is commonplace to provide water as soon as the guest is seated. Each glass of water served required 4 glasses of water to wash it.
Pick up a free fix-a-leak kit from the City’s Water Conservation Division. Fixing dripping faucets saves money!
Only run the dishwasher when full and operate the dishwasher at or near it’s recommended minimum flow rate.
Check for toilet leaks. Leaky toilets can waste up to 100 gallons of water per day. An easy way to check this is by putting a few drops of food coloring in your toilet tank; if the toilet bowl begins changing color without flushing it, then you likely have a leak.

Replace old spray nozzles with high-efficiency pre-rinse spray nozzles. Old spray nozzles used to rinse dishes before they go through the dishwasher can use up to 5 gallons of water per minute. Newer high-efficiency models can use as little as 0.65 gallons per minute, saving you water and money. The City offers high-efficiency pre-rinse spray valves, FREE! +
Install high-efficiency aerators at all handwashing stations. Hand washing is very prominent in restaurants, from kitchen staff to servers to guests in the bathroom. By installing low-flow aerators, you can save lots of water with each wash. The City offers high-efficiency faucet aerators, FREE! +
Install Watersense tank-type toilets and/or urinals. +
Install air-cooled ice machines. Water-cooled ice machines will use approximately 100,000 more gallons of water annually in producing 500 pounds of ice per day when compared to air-cooled machines.
Install connectionless commercial food steamers that qualify for Energy Star certification. Connectionless food steamers use new technology and provide advantages in energy and water efficiency.
Install Energy Star certified dishwashers.
Install high efficiency showerheads or participate in the City’s showerhead swap program. The City will replace your current standard showerheads with WaterSense labeled high efficiency models, free of charge! +
Replace your flushometer valve toilet with a WaterSense high-efficiency model. +

Install new or retrofit your current sprinkler system with a WaterSense 'Smart' irrigation controller. Smart controllers use local weather and landscape conditions to adjust watering times to meet plant needs, automatically. Controllers sometimes require additional components to be labeled WaterSense. Consult the City's website for more details. +
Install new or retrofit with Multi-Spray Multi-Trajectory (MSMT) and H2O Chip nozzles. +
Install a Rain sensor. Rain sensors override the sprinkler system when a certain amount of rain has fallen, and automatically resume normal operations when needed. +
Install drip irrigation. +
Plant drought tolerant native plants. Drought tolerant plants in your landscape will reduce your water use and save you money! Plants that qualify for the City's rebate are listed in the 2020 Drought Tolerant Plant List. +
Plant a rain garden. Rain gardens are slightly depressed basins within yards that are planted with deep-rooted, water-loving plants. They help to capture runoff from properties and remove pollutants.
Keep your grass at least 3 inches tall. Setting your mower blade higher allows your grass to take root, grow stronger, and retain soil moisture.
Buy or build a rain barrel! Barrels or buckets beneath your drainage pipes aid in collecting precipitation that can be used to water your garden or house plants. Collecting rainwater also helps to reduce stormwater runoff.

* Pick up Garbage around the business front. All of the litter and contaminants on our sidewalks and streets ends up in our waterways!
* Utilize environmentally friendly ice-melt on sidewalks and driveways.
Do not water grass or plants during times of rain or during the middle of the day. Especially in the summer when it’s hot, water your lawn and garden early in the morning, prior to peak sun, to reduce potential evaporation.
Adopt a Drain! The City of Bozeman’s Adopt a Drain program connects the dots between stormwater intakes and our local creeks. Pitch in to keep our waterways clean!
Install permeable sidewalks or replace with lower water use grass. Permeable pavement allows rainwater to infiltrate back into the ground and recharge our groundwater aquifers. While it may be slightly more expensive than traditional pavement, it will save money on stormwater and water retention infrastructure.
Use a broom, not a hose, to clean off sidewalks, patios and driveways. Watering impervious surfaces wastes water and also causes unwanted sediment and pollutant runoff.
Use non-toxic environmentally friendly and biodegradable cleaning products.
Dispose of hazardous waste properly. Things like batteries and light bulbs can seep toxic chemicals into our surface and groundwater. Check out the Gallatin Solid Waste Management District’s "WHAT TO DO WITH....?” tab on their website.
Go Plastic Straw-less! Americans throw away over 500 million straws every day-- that’s enough to circle the earth twice! Consider providing customers with glass straws, steel straws or paper straws.

Become a Stamping Station for GWC’s Steward Passport program. Businesses can receive Stamping Station materials (a stack of Passports and a stamp) from GWC at an extra cost. Stamping station payment must be received from the business by the end of March of the current year in order to ensure Passports can be distributed before the summer season.
* Educate customers on a regular basis about maintaining water quality and quantity using GWC materials.
* Help recruit volunteers for GWC’s watershed stewards events by putting up flyers, posting about our events on social media, sending out information on your newsletters, etc.
* Organize a watershed clean up day with your employees or lead a team of volunteers during GWC’s annual Gallatin River Clean Up Day. Businesses interested in organizing their own clean up day should contact GWC for more information.
Organize a dog poop clean up day with your coworkers and/or customers.
Sponsor an event for GWC, such as GWC’s annual Gallatin River Clean Up Day, a Gallatin Watershed Stewards Launch Event, a Steward Appreciation Event and/or our Annual Meeting.
Help fundraise for GWC. For example, serve as a peer fundraiser for GWC during Gallatin Valley’s annual Give Big.
