Welcome

Sarah Bunin Benor, a Professor of Contemporary Jewish Studies at Hebrew Union College and the University of Southern California, and Alicia Chandler, a graduate student in sociology at Wayne State University, are studying Jewish names. The researchers have several questions: Which names do Jews and non-Jews associate with Jews? Who has a “Starbucks name”? Who gives their children Biblical names? Israeli names? Who gives their dogs names like Babka and Afikomen? Porkchop? It should take you (on average) 10-12 minutes to complete the survey. Your participation is voluntary, and you may skip questions or stop any time. You must be at least 18 to participate.

Results will be shared in several venues, including books, articles, and websites. By filling out this survey, you are giving permission for the researchers to include your responses in these venues. To maintain privacy, the survey does not ask for your last name.

If you have questions, you may contact the researchers at sbenor@huc.edu or 213-765-2187. USC Research Office: irb@usc.edu. Project number: UP-19-00486.
[2020 addition: Note that the survey analysis is now complete, and your answers will not be included in that. The survey is still open based on the request of respondents and others. You can find the results of this survey at https://www.jewish-names.org/survey.]
