Impact of Disasters on Youth: Building Resilience in Children and Families

The Melissa Institute CEU Request

Extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, floods, and wildfires, have become more frequent and more extreme due to climate change. Such events pose major risks to human health and psychological well-being, especially for young people, who have been identified as a vulnerable population in disasters. This course focuses on key lessons from clinical research that highlight the mental and physical health impacts of disasters on youth as well as the factors that put youth at risk for poor mental health outcomes or that help mitigate disasters' impact. Based on these "risk-and-resilience" findings, implications for developing and implementing post-disaster interventions with youth will be discussed. Finally, examples of intervention strategies using the After the Storm manual (https://7-dippity.com/after-the-storm/) will be provided.

Learning Objectives:

1. Analyze how intimate partner violence survivors respond in moments of heightened danger with their partner to identify patterns.
