Survey background and how the data will be used.

Introduction
You are invited to take part in a survey to review local government and community climate change targets, strategies, emission and actions in Australia. This survey has been developed by three leading Australian and international climate change and local government organisations - Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE), ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) and Ironbark Sustainability.

About us

Beyond Zero Emissions is a think tank that shows through independent research and innovative solutions how Australia can prosper in a zero-emissions economy.

ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability is the leading global network of over 1,500 cities, towns and regions worldwide committed to building a sustainable future. In Australia, ICLEI Oceania is the focal point for the Global Covenant of Mayors.

For nearly two decades, Ironbark Sustainability has worked with councils and their communities to reduce greenhouse emissions, tackle climate change and implement sustainability projects and programs. There are 537 local governments in Australia, and since beginning their journey in 2004, Ironbark have worked with 260 of them, covering 86% of the population, in every state and territory.

About the survey
This research is being conducted to better understand local councils and communities’ climate change ambitions, actions, policies, strategies and targets. The study will identify successful cases across Australia and help to identify challenges and barriers faced by councils and communities, and provide recommendations for more effective progress.

This survey collects data, including:

     - Demographics information about your council or community
     - Baseline emissions
     - Climate related targets
     - Strategies and plans to reduce emissions
     - Actions and results already achieved
     - Monitoring, engagement and broader engagement
     - Opportunities and barriers to reduce council and community-wide emissions

Process
SurveyMonkey will be used to collect survey responses. If you choose to participate in the survey, you understand that any personal data collected from them in the survey may be transferred to other locations in which SurveyMonkey has offices.

You can respond as an individual, community member or a council representative. The survey will take between 5-30 minutes to complete, and the questions are more involved for councils compared to community. All responses will be confidential and used only for the purposes of this research study and will not be used in any identifiable way.  No names or other information that could personally identify you will be provided in any research. Information will be retained for five years post completion of the study, after which time will be permanently destroyed.

Results will be published as reports and articles, which will be available online at the BZE, ICLEI and Ironbark websites. You will also be provided with a copy of the final review at your request.

Participation
Your participation in this research study is voluntary. If you decide to participate, you may quit at any time throughout the study. There will be no penalty or loss of benefits if you decide to leave the study, and your relationship with BZE, ICLEI or Ironbark will not be affected.

Closing Date: 1st April 2021
