Overview

This survey is for independent artists and creatives who work in the professional performing arts in Australia.

It is the fourth time this survey is being conducted. It aims to identify how independents juggle work and get things done.

Definition of 'independent' or 'indie'

For the purposes of this survey, we consider an independent artist/creative as someone who is paid for artistic work on a project-to-project basis.

Professional independent artists generally have an ABN and operate across a range of business models: as a sole trader, as a partnership, as an unincorporated group or collective, or as a micro organisation.

If you own or run a micro org without core/operational funding, are paid on a project basis and do not receive an ongoing regular salary, you are also eligible to participate in the survey.

Independent artists may also be employed on short-term contracts for specific projects.

If you are a part-time or full-time employee in an artistic role (eg. artistic director, artistic associate, company dancer), please do not fill out this survey. Most of these roles fall within the scope of TNA's biennial Salary Survey.

Payment

Our intention is to pay the first 250 eligible respondents a fee of $50 for their time. As such, the final survey question asks for your bank details.

Payment eligibility:
1. You are a professional independent artist or creative working in the performing arts.
2. You are based in Australia.
3. You have completed the survey in full and submitted accurate responses.
4. We have not already received 250 eligible responses. TNA will provide an update here when we have paid 250 respondents.

We are also offering non TNA members a complimentary 1-year TNA Individual Membership.

Before You Begin

The survey asks questions that some may find confronting - including questions on finances, health and the impact of COVID-19 on your practice. Please be gentle with yourself - take a break if needed, or stop if you feel like you cannot proceed.

If you wish to preview the survey or gather information before beginning, we have prepared a word document template for download.
