Informed Consent to Participate in Research

Hello and thank you for your consideration to participate in this project conducted by Kathleen “Katie” Palmer, Phoebenoelle “Phoebe” Merman, Taylor “Caroline” Turner, Trinity Strecker, Kelly Rapp, and Yeongju Lee, under the guidance of their research advisors Christopher “Chris” L. Heffner, Psy.D., Ph.D. and A. Ianto West, Psy.D. We, as members of the Positive Psychology Lab at Antioch University Seattle (AUS), are conducting the project, “Humor as a Moderator between Gender-Related Stress & Well-Being in the Transgender and Gender-Diverse (TGD) Community.” We seek to better understand the role of humor within the TGD community, and its moderating impacts on your coping, resilience, gender-related stress, and well-being.
---
Your consent to participate in our project is completely voluntary and limited to the completion of this SurveyMonkey. You may skip any of the items, and/or discontinue and withdraw (i.e., by exiting from the SurveyMonkey browser window) at any point in the research process without any penalty. We will not collect any personal identifying information. All responses are kept in a password protected, HIPAA-compliant Google Drive accessible only to this project's investigators (as listed above).
---
Succinctly, the SurveyMonkey includes (a) three well-established measures of happiness/well-being, gender-related stress, and humor style, (b) a self-developed measure pertaining to your use of humor, and (C) a background/demographic questionnaire. We estimate you will spend approximately 15-20 minutes completing the entire SurveyMonkey; although, we pose several open-ended questions which, depending on the depth of your response, may extend the time of your participation.
---
The anticipated, indirect benefits of participation include: (1) gaining some insight into your perceived levels of gender-related stress, resilience, happiness, and humor style, (2) sharing your unique behaviors/experiences/insights as a member of the TGD community, (3) becoming familiar with well-accepted psychometric measures of happiness/well-being, gender-related stress, and humor style (4) deepening/increasing TGD community stakeholders’ awareness/understanding of the unique behaviors/experiences/insights of TGD community members, and (5) contributing to the existing body of psychological research/current understanding of humor as a moderator between gender-related stress and well-being within the TGD community.
---
Most of the SurveyMonkey pertains to positive aspects of your life. Although, we also aim to better understand gender-related stress; the latter may be distressing to you. If participation triggers a negative reaction, you are encouraged to explore these resources:
