With USDA Farm to School grant funds, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and Minnesota Department of Education are developing a Harvest of the Month (HOTM) Program so schools can access local food monthly in the cafeteria, classroom, and community. The HOTM Program will promote the use of seasonally available and locally grown products in school nutrition programs. Marketing materials that showcase the use of these products to students and recipes to help food service staff utilize those products will be included in the HOTM program, as well as accompanying educational resources that will extend the program into classrooms.
The HOTM program’s goal is to encourage healthy food choices by increasing students’ exposure to and knowledge about seasonal foods while also supporting local farmers and building excitement about school meals.
