Kaupapa Māori / Māori Medium Employment Based Initial Teacher Education (EBITE) Funding Award

EBITE programmes focused on Kaupapa Māori, and Māori medium education were established to enable individuals holding Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) to undertake a teaching qualification while employed in a school/kura.

Eligible schools/kura can apply for funding to support a LAT trainee teacher through an approved EBITE programme. The Ministry will cover reliever costs, trainee teacher support costs, a contribution to course costs, and induction related costs to support a LAT trainee teacher. There are up to 65 funding awards available per cohort, with new cohorts starting every two years. The first cohort will begin in 2025.

To be eligible to apply for EBITE programme funding, your school/kura must:

Be a state or state-integrated school/kura

Support a LAT trainee teacher(s) who was employed as a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) teacher at the school prior to joining the EBITE programme

Support a LAT trainee teacher(s) who holds a current LAT issued by the Teaching Council

Support a LAT trainee teacher(s) who is enrolled or intending to enrol in an approved EBITE programme

Support a LAT trainee teacher(s) who will teach Te Reo Māori as a subject or in a Māori immersion setting

Support a LAT trainee teacher(s) who has not received a TeachNZ scholarship, funding through the School's Onsite Training Programme (SOTP), or funding through the TeachFirstNZ EBITE programme

Attest capability to provide a robust mentoring and support programme for the appointed LAT trainee teacher(s)
