Announcing a FREE, intensive, 2-day training course which focuses on entry level roles in the Production, Assistant Director and Locations Departments on scripted productions.

If you are at the start of your career and have been trying to secure your first job, or maybe you have a couple of credits and you're looking to improve your professional practice and fill the gaps in your understanding - then this is the course for you.

You’ll learn what’s involved in these roles and how to do them well. There’s practical training on how to read production paperwork and understanding industry lingo. A guide to freelance working and CV advice will help you in your job-search and with input from a range of industry professionals, you'll finish the course equipped with the knowledge and tools and contacts to help you with your next steps.

Hit the Ground Running is free to attend - it's informal, interactive and lots of fun too.

Course Content:
  • The structure of film and television crews.
  • Set etiquette with general hints and tips.
  • Understanding industry production paperwork.
  • Hands-on walkie talkie workshop.
  • Effective CV writing for film and television.
  • Typical pay, conditions and common work patterns.
  • Freelance working considerations and how to find work.
  • Guest speakers share their tips on working in Production, Locations and Assistant Director Departments.
Dates & Locations:
For these courses, we're targeting those based in Scotland who live beyond the central belt. No academic education or qualifications are necessary. Applications are strongly encouraged from people who are traditionally under represented in the industry or may have faced barriers to entry.

Selected applicants will be offered a place on their nearest course. Travel, accommodation and childcare expenses can be provided if required.

  • Inverness - 24 & 25 January 2025
  • Dumfries - 31 January & 1 February 2025
Eligibility:
  • You should be 18+.
  • You should be available and actively seeking work in this field.
  • Students and those in education are not eligible for this training course.
  • You should be based in Scotland and live outwith the central belt.
    If you're based within the central belt of Scotland and not eligible for this course, sign up to our mailing list to be notfied of future opportunities in your area.

Application Guidance:

This
course is for people who are seeking entry level positions in the Production, Locations or Assistant Director departments. You can find out more about entry level roles in these departments on the ScreenSkills website via these links: Production, Locations, Assistant Directors.

If you are interested in other areas of film and television, or if you're yet to decide, we encourage you to fill in the application and if you're not eligible or selected for this course, we'll get in touch with suggestions of other opportunities relating to your area of interest.

There are limited spaces available on the course. Our selection panel will look for evidence of:
  • An understanding of the industry - you'll learn more about the industry on the course, but in selecting applicants, we want you to demonstrate a general understanding of the film and tv industry.
  • Enthusiasm and motivation - we would like you to show a passion for the film and television industry. You will need to be extremely motivated to succeed! We want to help you to do just that but you need to show us that you are committed to a career in this area.
  • Transferable skills - we'd like to know what skills you've gained from your previous experience and how they'd be useful working in the role you're looking for in film and television. Tell us about your communication skills and organisational abilities.
Application Procedure:
  • Please give full and detailed answers to the application questions as the selection panel will carefully consider your responses when selecting participants. You may wish to take a note of the application questions and work on your answers off-line before pasting them in to the online application page.
  • We'll give you help with your CV on the course but we've asked for you to upload your CV, if you have one, to illustrate your previous experience. CVs should be saved and uploaded as a .pdf with with your name as the file name. If you don't have a CV, you can tell us about your previous experience in question 7.
  • If you'd prefer, you can submit an audio recording of answers to questions 6-12. The audio file should be no more than 5 minutes long, saved in an .mp3 format with your name as the file-name and emailed to vision@bectu.org.uk before the deadline with HTGR 2025 in the subject line. Questions 1-3 should still be completed on the online form.
  • To submit your online application, you need to press the DONE button at the bottom of the final page - you will then see a confirmation webpage.
  • In addition to this online form, we also need you to complete a separate anonymous equalities monitoring form which should be completed once, at any time before you submit your application - click here to complete.
The deadline for applications is 9am Tuesday 3 December 2024
We aim to get back to all applicants as soon as possible after the deadline but depending on the number of applications we receive, it may take up to a week.
