Thank you for your interest in participating in the launch of Ho'ololi: The Environmental Art Garden with 2011 Artist in Residence Patrick Dougherty.
During the artist's 20-day visit, he will work directly with the community to develop, plan and create a site-specific installation using saplings of invasive tree species. The final sculpture will mark the launch of the Hui No`eau Environmental Art Garden: Ho`ololi, a new public art program which aims to cultivate community and raise awareness about Hawai‘i’s endangered ecosystems by inspiring conversation, encouraging public participation, and creating fellowship between artists and environmentalists.
Nearly 100 volunteers are needed to collect materials/ sticks (requires hiking into protected land areas, cutting leaves & twigs from trees and bundling them by the truckload), transport them to the Hui (requires owning or borrowing a truck), build scaffolding, design the sculpture, keep the area safe & clean, and talk to the public over the course of Dougherty's 3-week residency. What we're really looking for are folks that can commit to at least a half day of work, are willing to get their hands dirty and have a passion for teamwork and volunteerism.
