General Information
  • Group Sizes:  Minimum of 10 and Maximum of 25 (can accommodate up to 100 with advanced notice and based upon staff need)
  • Group Ages:  Minimum age 16 (Some projects may require older volunteers)
  • Group Supervision:  One adult chaperone per every 5 volunteers under the age of 18
  • Group Time Slots:  Groups are typically scheduled for three hour time slots.  Morning:  9:30-12:30.  Afternoon:  1:30-4:30.  Morning time slots are preferred by our staff.
  • Typical Projects:  Most groups are placed with our Horticulture Staff to assist on grounds in all types of weather.  Projects may include:  weeding, planting, exhibit renovations, spreading pine straw, etc.  Groups with specialized skills such as those who can build may be given an opportunity to build an enrichment item or exhibit component for one of our animals.
The Process
  • Plan ahead.  This program tends to fill up quickly at certain times of year.
  • Fill out and return this Group Volunteer Application.
  • A Volunteer Department staff member will review your application and be in touch to confirm your date if a project is available and provide details on when and where to meet, what to bring, etc.
  • On your volunteer day, come to the Center dressed for the weather and have fun!
Terms and Conditions
  • We agree to fully commit to any project granted to us and will notify the Greensboro Science Center Volunteer Department at least 72 hours prior to our shift if we need to cancel or adjust our numbers.
  • We agree to submit a Special Event Volunteer Form for each volunteer.
  • We agree to provide only volunteers who are 16 years or older and one adult chaperone per every 5 volunteers under the age of 18.
  • We agree to uphold all rules and regulations including but not limited to:  not eating at stations, not using electronic devices in public viewing areas, not leaving our stations unattended without proper relief, and all other regulations noted by Greensboro Science Center staff.
  • We agree to wear closed toed shoes and an appropriate plain colored shirt or shirt with our organization logo.
  • We understand that we are not only representing our organization but also the Greensboro Science Center and will act in a manner to bring only credit, honor, and good repute to the Center.
  • We understand our group performance will be taken into consideration for future volunteer projects.
  • NOTE:  The Center reserves the right to reject a volunteer for any reason, including but not limited to if a project is not available or if a group's previous performance prohibits them returning in the future.  The Center cannot guarantee volunteer placement.  We will, however, make every effort to match volunteer applicants to volunteer opportunities based upon the needs of the Center and the interests and abilities of the volunteer.
