As part of its mandate to promote human development and democratic transition in the Arab region and as a response to the dire conflict in the Syrian Arab Republic, ESCWA launched the National Agenda for the Future of Syria (NAFS) in 2012 to serve as a platform for technical dialogue for a network of Syrian experts. Its inclusive approach to enhancing a culture of dialogue and promoting sustainable peace has enabled it to bring Syrians together to develop policy alternatives on the most pressing socio- economic issues.

The NAFS programme aims to support long-term sustainable livelihoods in the agricultural sector in Syria with a focus on resilience and stabilization. As part of its work, NAFS will hold a training on the Water, Energy and Food Nexus to support food security and sustainable agriculture for recovery in the Syrian Arab Republic.

The training’s specific objectives include:

1.      Conveying the importance of the Water, Energy and Food Security Nexus (WEF Nexus) as an integrated approach in planning, policy coherence and coordination between institutions to achieve resources sustainability and supply security in the context of recovery and post conflict.

2.      Initiating a dialogue between Syrians from different sectoral backgrounds on how to mainstream WEF Nexus approach in sectoral policies and what governance structure will better support inter-sectoral coordination to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2, 6, 7 and 13.

3.      Establishing a Community of Practice that will further support a broader network of Syrians from the three key sectors to raise awareness on the potential of the Nexus approach in “building back better and leaving no one behind”.

The training targets Syrian experts in water, energy, agriculture and food security.
