Background

Thank you for your interest in tackling grand challenges to Delta science. By providing feedback on the draft Grand Challenges Essay, available here: https://deltascienceplan.deltacouncil.ca.gov/, you will help inform the next iteration of the Delta Science Plan, planned for 2025, and ensure that the plan accurately reflects the needs of the Delta science community.

Catalyzing Science Coordination through Grand Challenges

The Delta Science Program is developing the third iteration of the Delta Science Plan (Delta Stewardship Council 2019), a shared framework for science called for in the Delta Plan that provides the vision, principles, and approaches to better coordinate Delta science and more effectively communicate the outcomes of science activities and their management implications to decision makers.
The purpose of this survey is to solicit input on the draft Grand Challenges Essay, available here: https://deltascienceplan.deltacouncil.ca.gov/. The essay’s four proposed Grand Challenges were defined through a literature review and synthesis process with the goal of creating a structure for the 2025 Delta Science Plan that catalyzes forward-thinking and proactive science coordination and action in the Delta (Figure 1, below).

The next Delta Science Plan will include the final Grand Challenges as well as strategies, tools, and actions to address them. We invite broad participation in this survey, and additional public workshops on the Delta Science Plan will be hosted by the Delta Science Program later in 2024. Visit the Delta Stewardship Council’s Delta Science Plan webpage (https://deltascienceplan.deltacouncil.ca.gov/) or contact collaborativescience@deltacouncil.ca.gov for any questions or to learn more about the 2025 Delta Science Plan update.

This survey is a tool to collect high level responses to these draft grand challenges. If you would prefer to submit a full comment letter, please submit via email to collaborativescience@deltacouncil.ca.gov by 5:00 PM, July 12, 2024.

We estimate that this survey will take approximately 15 minutes. Taking this survey is voluntary and all responses are anonymous unless you choose to be identified. You do not need to answer all questions and we encourage to you skip any question(s) you prefer not to answer. Please be aware that individual survey responses are subject to retrieval under the Public Records Act. Please provide your input by 5:00 PM July 12, 2024.
