Regional Meeting: A Community-Based Approach to Marine Planning and Protection for the Gros Morne Region

Working together for the future of our ocean and coastal communities

1.Name
2.What community of Newfoundland do you live?
3.What company, group, community or organization are you here representing (name all that apply)?
4.How long have you been working in you field of expertise?
5.Would you support a shellfish (mussel/ scallop/ oyster) aquaculture development in the Gros Morne Region?
6.Would you support a finfish (salmon) aquaculture development in the region?
7.Would you support increased development of eco-tourism operations in the Gros Morne Region?
8.Did you know a marine protected area has multiple “zones”. Physically, they would be separated but functionally, they are connected due to the nature and fluidity of the ocean. “The Core Area”; Zone 1, would have a significantly vulnerable ecosystem or high cultural value and would be set for complete preservation or no-take. Zone 2; “The Natural Environment Zones”, would be a buffer zone to enhance protection of zone 1 and used for ecological research and monitoring.  “The Outer Area”; Zone 3, referred to as the conservation zone, would allow renewable resources (logging/ commercial fishing, etc.) and aquaculture industry to exist and would KEEP OUT oil and gas exploration and drilling! Zone 3 would also have high potential for non-consumptive recreational use and public education.

Now you know we're wondering, do you think the Gros Morne Region has potential areas for various level of protection?
9.Would you like to be kept in the loop on this project moving forward?
10.Would you like to be apart of the Gros Morne Science, Fisheries OR Regional Advisory Committees and help us create this marine network plan for the region?
