Welcome to the 16th Year of Poetry Out Loud in New Hampshire

COVID-19 Update:
The Governor announced (July 14, 2020) that school districts across the state will set their own re-opening procedures and policies for returning to school this fall. The NH State Council on the Arts is committed to offering Poetry Out Loud to NH schools this year and understands there may well be a need to adjust our guidelines, program, and requirements in light of the coronavirus and its impact on students, schools, and our state. We are taking time this summer and fall to learn from the National Endowment for the Arts (which funds POL), peers around the country, and from our local teachers, past participants, and judges about how we can best deliver this program in this changing and challenging time.

Thank you in advance for bearing with us and understanding we simply cannot predict now how the program and our schools may look in early 2021 when statewide contests take place.

Registration
Please use this form to sign-up to be part of the 2020-2021 program. We are hoping to get an approximate count of participating schools by the end of October 2020 to assist in our planning. We understand your school and students' ability to participate in the program may change due to the coronavirus as time goes on.
About POL
Poetry Out Loud encourages NH youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. Students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. Poetry Out Loud builds on the spoken word as an art form, inviting the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the classroom.

Nationwide, the program involves 365,000 students annually and awards $50,000 in scholarships. Funding comes from The Poetry Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts, and is awarded to each State Arts Council to carry out a statewide program.

In New Hampshire, any high school — public, private, or parochial, as well as home school groups — are welcomed to participate. The program becomes more popular every year, and to stay within our resources, we are limiting participation to the first 45 high schools who register.
