First Nations Advocacy Feedback FormThe Albanese government has made a commitment to deliver a new national cultural policy that puts First Nations arts and culture at the centre by the end of 2022.In upcoming public consultations, NAVA will join First Nations arts organisations and Australian arts peak bodies to ensure this includes centreing the principles of First Nations self-determination and story sovereignty, and working alongside our First Nations colleagues to support First Nations culture bearers, artists and organisations, communities, and knowledges across Australia. In consulting with First Nations colleagues and the visual arts roundtable, NAVA is amending the recommendations to government as part of our Put First Nations First advocacy priority: Boost Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support (IVAIS) funding for Indigenous arts organisations, peak bodies and support agencies to provide appropriate support across all states and territories, with targeted support for regional and remote communities. Increase funding for First Nations-led art centres to enable them to take advantage of new prevalent market opportunities within Australia and abroad. Commit targeted financial support for self-determined First Nations artists. Invest in First-Nations-led education and training programs. Invest in First Nations-led infrastructure including studios, small-to-medium arts organisations and galleries. Introduce targeted programs focused on creating and retaining First Nations employment, supporting micro businesses and strengthening existing businesses, as well as funding First Nations designated roles for visual arts peak bodies and touring agencies sector-wide. Action legislative reform as recommended by the Fake Art Harms Culture campaign. Ensure public investment is tied to equity and industry standards for First Nations people.
