Food Waste Survey - Central Okanagan

Last fall, the Regional District of Central Okanagan initiated Phase One of engagement to determine community support for a curbside food waste collection program in the Central Okanagan. The results showed 73% of respondents expressed enthusiasm for such a program and 83% said they would likely participate.

Your interest in a food waste collection program for the Central Okanagan hasn't gone unnoticed and we are now in Phase Two of public engagement. For the month of June, we want to hear more from you regarding curbside food waste collection. Your participation will help us design a successful program that serves residents region-wide.

Through this survey, we are looking for further feedback on various aspects of the food waste program identified in Phase One, including considerations for a transfer station location, how often garbage is to be collected, costs and wildlife concerns and preferred methods for education and outreach.

This survey closes July 2, 2024.

Please choose which statement best represents your opinion?

Question Title

* 7. Current facilities able to process food waste are either out of region or too far for curbside collection trucks to travel to, therefore yard waste mixed with food waste (organic waste) from curbside collection trucks would need to be sent to a transfer station. The organic waste would then be loaded into larger long-haul trucks and sent to processing facilities that may exist outside of the region.

There are many things that need to be considered when determining transfer station locations, some of which are listed below. Please choose your top three from the list below that you would like considered when determining a transfer station.

How important is it to you that compost from curbside carts be made available for purchase for use in the region (i.e. yards, parks etc.)?

Question Title

* 12. What other thoughts, concerns or comments would you like to share about a curbside residential organics (food waste) collection program or determining a location for a transfer station?
