The SEAE Sustainability Pledge

At the Sustainability, Environment, and the Arts in Education (SEAE) Research Centre we believe in working together to support sustainable action. Take our annual pledge and by committing to one or more of the following actions you can make a big difference to the community around you. People are more successful at continuing action if they do so incrementally over time so choose a few more to focus on each year. Every action helps us work towards a more sustainable planet!

* 1. I pledge to, whenever possible:

Use my own water bottle to avoid purchasing plastic drink bottles

Bring my own food to university in reusable containers

Buy and eat local organic food products

Grow my own food at home or at a university/community garden

Go vegetarian, vegan or significantly reduce my use of animal-based products

Switch off lights when I leave a room

Switch off computers, unplug chargers and other equipment when not in use

Borrow instead of buying (eg. from the Brisbane Tool library)

Choose alternatives to plastic where possible or choose recycled plastic products

Use post-consumer waste recycled paper for printing and notebooks or go paperless

Recycle and reduce my use of paper, glass and cans

Compost or recycle my food waste and reduce unnecessary food waste

Dispose of electronic equipment in a sustainable way (eg. batteries, phones, keyboards, earphones)

Donate excess university food to local food producers or to community groups

Wear second-hand or upcycled clothing

Avoid taking unnecessary flights

Use public transport more

Ride a bike instead of driving a car where possible

Share a ride to university

Limit my water use (for example taking shorter showers, reusing water, turning the tap off when I brush my teeth)

Replace harsh chemical products with environmentally friendly alternatives in the house and garden (eg. use neem oil on plants instead of commercial pesticides, look for grey water safe cleaners)

Bring my own bag to the shops

Use reusable wax wraps instead of plastic wrap

Bring my keep cup

Bring my own reusable cutlery, bowl/container and straw

Be a conscious and ethical consumer (eg. avoid fast fashion)

Reduce my digital carbon footprint (eg. delete old emails, clean up your cloud spaces to reduce unnecessary extra files stored on servers)

Choose environmentally conscious applications (eg. the web browser Ecosia)

Invest in products that last longer and choose to repair products to increase their life of use
