MDLC Priorities Survey

MDLC wants to know what issues are most important to you. MDLC has four main priorities. Your input will help decide if we should keep these priorities, change them, or add to them.

People with disabilities should be safe. No one should be hurt, neglected, restrained or secluded.

* 2. Priority 2: Increase Integration and Decrease Discrimination.
People with disabilities should get the services they need to live, work and participate in the communities they choose. Students with disabilities should get the special education services they need. No one should be discriminated against because they have a disability.

* 3. Priority 3: Increase Access to Appropriate Services.
People with disabilities should be able to choose the supports they want and to self-direct their services. More school, housing, jobs, community activities and health care choices are needed.

* 4. Priority 4: Increase Statewide Awareness of MDLC as an Advocacy Resource.
People with disabilities from all Minnesota communities should know how to reach MDLC for legal help. Outreach to and partnerships with communities of color and other groups are needed.

* 6. Systems Change: MDLC advocates for individuals and for changes to systems that serve people with disabilities. Currently, MDLC spends at least half of its staff time on individual cases. We work on systems change as well but it is not more than half of our workload.

Systems change work focuses on policies and systemic issues that create barriers for people with disabilities. This can be class action lawsuits, but it can also mean monitoring facilities, investigations of abuse/neglect, engaging in more policy work, and focusing on systems issues vs. individual issues.

Focusing more on systems change work would mean that we would be taking less individual cases for individual clients.

Do you think MDLC should continue prioritizing individual work for at least half of its workload, or should we spend more time on "systems" issues?
