Strengthening Environmental Sustainability in Australian Government Procurement
Policy Information
The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is developing an Environmentally Sustainable Procurement (ESP) Policy for Australian Government procurement. If approved, the Policy is planned to take effect from mid-2024, with staged targets to support the supply market to respond to the changes.
Making environmentally sustainable choices in Australian Government purchases supports Australia’s domestic and international environmental commitments. This includes reaching NetZero by 2050, a Circular Economy by 2030, meeting the National Waste Policy targets, targets under the Buy Australian Plan and the Nature Positive Plan.
If your organisation supplies construction services, ICT, Furniture fixtures and equipment, or textiles including uniforms to the Australian Government you are likely to be covered by the policy changes.
Under the draft policy, your organisation may be required to submit a Supplier Environmental Sustainability Plan (SESP), and/or report against environmental metrics for applicable tenders and contracts. Click here for more information about the draft policy.
