Invitation Letter

CSMLS has started an article series examining real ethical scenarios. Some of these articles are medical laboratory specific while others affect us as health care professionals.

We also are working towards creating a flash card game that presents ethical scenarios, such as:
  • You overhear that your family member’s lab results are ready. You get a sense the results are bad. What do you do?
  • The family of a dying man asks you not to take blood samples from him. You have just inserted the needle and are withdrawing blood. What do you do?
  • You know a co-worker conducted a lab test on themselves and sent the results to their family physician. What do you do?
  • You see someone use the same needle to draw blood from two different veins. What do you do?
  • A patient you see often invites you to be friends on social media. What do you do?
  • These situations can be common or rare, directly related to our profession or more general and/or associated with working professionals or students.
We need your help to identify ethical scenarios that can happen in our profession.

Provide a description of the scenario in one-to-three sentences. You can complete this survey as many times as you like.

  • The information you provide is anonymous and confidential.
  • Do not provide identifying information about yourself, another person or an organization.
  • This is not meant to be a complaint forum, but used for educational purposes. CSMLS will not follow up on any scenario you provide in this survey.
  • Contact your manager if you have an immediate ethical dilemma.

50% of survey complete.
