Consent and Boundaries in Ethically Non-Monogamous Relationships
You are being asked to participate in a research study on experiences of individuals who identify as ethically non-monogamous (ENM). The study is designed to explore the experiences of ENM individuals related to consent and boundaries during sexual activity. The primary means of data collection will be an internet survey, with a potential for a follow-up interview. Please read this form before agreeing to participate in this research.
Purpose The general purpose of this research is to understand the experiences of ENM individuals related to consent and boundaries during sexual activity. Specifically, what vocabularies of motive are used for boundary pushing, consent violations or sexual misconduct.
Study Procedure If you choose to participate in this study, the first part of this research is an online survey. The survey is completely optional; you can skip any questions you choose, and you may stop at any time. Toward the end of the survey, there is another question about a follow-up interview session on Zoom. At that point you will be given instructions on how to contact the principal investigator (PI) to participate in those interviews. There is also an option to be contacted by the PI. If you choose this option, you will need to submit some contact information, which would compromise anonymity. Confidentiality, however, would still be maintained. Participating in the survey does not require that you also participate in the interviews.
Risks There are minimal risks involved in this research, but some of the questions you will be asked have to do with sexual activity and consent violations. There are questions about your experiences, some of which you may have considered negative. Again, you are only asked to answer which questions you choose.
Benefits You will not receive any direct compensation for your participation in this research. The information you provide may generally help people have a better understanding of consent violations in ENM settings.
Confidentiality Information collected from you during this research will be kept strictly confidential to the extent permitted by the law. The surveys are anonymous and track no identifiable data. Any information in the interviews that could possibly identify you will be redacted. However, the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at St. Xavier University, or federal agencies with appropriate regulatory oversight (i.e., Office for Human Rights Protection) may review your records. When the results of this research are published or discussed at conferences, no information will be included that would reveal your identity. All data will be kept for six years or until the study is completed, whichever is longer, at which point it will be destroyed.
Questions If you have any questions about the study, you may contact Dr. Steve Taylor at (773) 298-3282. If you have questions regarding your rights as a participant that you feel are not adequately answered within this form, you may contact the IRB Chair at the following email address: irb@sxu.edu
