Aside from the economic cost, there is an intangible cost, not fully recognized in these figures, of the immeasurable human suffering caused by poor occupational safety and health (OSH) conditions.
This is tragic and regrettable because this suffering is largely preventable.
Psychosocial risks, work-related stress and non-communicable diseases are of growing concern for many workers in all parts of the world. At the same time, many workers remain challenged by persistent work-related safety and health risks and it is important not to overlook these populations as the world of work continues to transform.
Other emerging OSH risks are advancing technologies, changing demographics and changes in work organization on account of globalization resulting nonstandard form of employment.
Taking precautions and investing in a healthy and safe workplace not only may it be a requirement by national laws and regulations, but also it makes business sense.
Companies that ensure that their workforce is safe and healthy enjoy higher levels of engagement, of motivation and overall better productivity. Likewise, workers that feel safe and are healthy and well while working, they can gain in motivation and perform well.
