Day 1: November 13th- LGBTQQ Youth and Schools: The Basics- This course is for teachers, counselors, and administrators who want to understand better what research says about lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth experience in schools. It will cover current research on student perceptions of teachers, curriculum and policy, as well as examining local, state, and national policies that govern what schools must offer LGBTQQ students. In particular, we will look at recent court cases that ruled in favor of trans students and consider legal and school climate issues to be addressed to make trans students feel welcome and included.
Day 2: November 16th- LGBTQQ Youth and Schools: Creating Welcoming Spaces- This course is for teachers, counselors and administrators who already have the basics covered! You know what the law says and you know what LGBTQQ stands for. Now you want to know what else you can do. We will look at materials that you can add to the library media center collection, at ideas for using LGBTQ novels in classes, and about ways to make the Gay Straight Trans Alliance a powerful force for school climate change in your school.
