Let's Talk Trash

Cowichan Tribes is working on a Solid Waste Management Plan and we need your input.

This plan will set a path for how we produce, collect and dispose our community's solid waste (such as garbage, organics and recyclables) and the infrastructure that helps us manage our waste (such as garbage and recycling bins, trucks and facilities).

Question Title

* 1. Currently, Cowichan Tribes collects garbage twice a week and recycling and composting once a week from residents. The operators collect waste using two side loader trucks and one flatbed truck. Generally, each home is limited to three garbage bags per pick-up. Bulky items are picked up a few times a year by operators.

* 4. In 2020, we examined how much of our waste we could keep out of the landfill through recycling or composting. The chart above shows that about 82% of our current waste could be kept out of the landfill.

If we recycle or compost that waste, our annual disposal costs can be reduced and the savings can be used for other community initiatives.
