Westport is the State Government’s planning program to move container trade from Fremantle to Kwinana. This includes planning a new port, and the connected freight road, rail, and logistics operations.

In the coming decades, Fremantle Port faces significant constraints that will impact trade efficiency, the community, and the WA economy, making it unsuitable to be WA's long-term container port.

The transition is expected to happen by the late 2030s. More detail about the process, analysis, design and timings for the new port can be found here.

The State Government recently announced that Westport is now funded for the 'definition planning' phase. This means we can refine the port and channel designs to determine potential environmental impacts and approaches to minimise and/or manage those impacts to the greatest extent possible. These designs will also inform the ongoing assessment process with both the State and Commonwealth regulators.

A final investment decision to proceed with the construction of Westport can only be made once environmental approval has been granted.

We know from our recent community survey results, that safeguarding the environmental health of Cockburn Sound is the number one priority the community wants Westport to get right.

We have a lot of work to do over the coming years including further consultation with the community and stakeholders who are passionate about the marine environment and recreational values of Cockburn Sound.

Consultation will include opportunities to provide feedback directly with our team and partners, and through consultation run by State and Federal regulators.
