CALIMERO
Identification of stakeholders & themes for Social LCA

Please answer a few questions about Social Life Cycle Assessment

What is the CALIMERO project?

The CALIMERO project aims at improving the social, economic and environmental performance of bio-based processes. Information on the project can be found here. This survey focuses on social aspects related to the life cycle of bio-based processes. Bio-based processes use biologically sourced materials (e.g., vegetable oils or fibres) as inputs. Biofuels are not considered in the scope of the CALIMERO project.

What is Social Life Cycle Assessment?

"Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) is a methodology to assess the social impacts of products and services across their life cycle (e.g. from the extraction of raw materials to the end-of-life phase, e.g. disposal). S-LCA provides information on social and socio-economic aspects for decision-making, in the prospect to improve the social performance of an organization and ultimately the well-being of stakeholders. " (UNEP, 2020)

What is the purpose of this questionnaire?

We aim to identify the most relevant categories of stakeholders (i.e., those most affected - positively or negatively - by the supply chain's activities) and sub-categories (i.e., the aspects that affect the different stakeholder categories) for different bio-based supply chains. This will help understand the potential positive and negative social impact hotspots related to different bio-based products supply chains.

The questionnaire has been designed according to the international guidelines for S-LCA provided by the UNEP. If you are not familiar with S-LCA, please have a look at our short explanatory video (Click here). Your answers should cover as much as possible of the whole spectrum of activities of the value chain of bio-based processes, depending on your knowledge (to be informed in question #5). These activities include the production of raw materials used in the bio-based processes (e.g., cotton farming), fabrication and manufacturing processes (e.g., for turning cotton into T-shirts), the use of products, and their end-of-life (e.g., landfilling or recycling practices).

1.Please indicate the organisation to which you are affiliated:(Required.)
2.Please indicate your position's title (e.g., research & development):
3.Please indicate the region(s) in which your organisation is located.(Required.)
4.Please indicate the bio-based sector you are working in (or that you are the most familiar with). The  remaining questions below relate to the supply chain for the sector selected here.(Required.)
5.Please indicate which step(s) of the life cycle of bio-based process for the selected supply chain you are familiar with (depending on your knowledge of the selected supply chain).

For example, if you know the organisation providing your business with biologically sourced raw materials, your evaluation will include the relevance of different social aspects for the production of such raw materials.
(Required.)
6.Please evaluate the relevance of stakeholder categories for the selected supply chain:

In S-LCA, a stakeholder category is a group type that can be affected by the activities of organizations involved in the life cycle of the product, service or organisation under consideration.
