Introduction

In line with commitments outlined in our Fourth Air Quality Action Plan to improve local air quality, we’re consulting on a proposal to expand City of York Council’s existing Smoke Control Area to cover the whole of York.

This proposal will not ban solid fuel burning but will require all residents and businesses to take responsibility for the fuel they burn so as to minimise smoke and air pollution to protect and improve health.

The rules for Smoke Control Areas do not apply to garden bonfires, barbecues, chimineas or firepits.

Further background information and details of the proposals can be found at York.gov.uk/SmokeControlAreaConsultation. We would like your views on these proposals.

The survey closes on 3rd June 2025.
