The Youth Mental Health Steering Committee with representatives from the Arizona Department of Education Project AWARE, Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) and Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) are joining forces to recognize school sites statewide that are proactively addressing student mental health in Arizona. School Mental Health Champions provide comprehensive support for Schools and Districts that address mental wellness through prevention, early intervention, and partnerships with community behavioral health providers. They model what mental health champions can do by:
  • Has established partnerships with community behavioral health (BH) providers.
  • Has a process for parents to opt in and/or opt out of mental health referrals.
  • Has a mental health webpage on the school website, dedicated to mental health and well-being that lists their partnered community providers.
  • Issues badges for students in grades 9-12 and badges have 988 or mental health crisis numbers on the back.
  • Staff that interact with students in grades 6-12 receive suicide prevention training in one of the AHCCCS approved evidence-based suicide training.
  • Has and completes the SHAPE profile report annually.
  • Complete all 7 domains of the School Mental Health Quality Assessment on SHAPE.
  • Has policies and procedures in place to refer students to Behavioral Health community mental health support.
