The Town of Coventry is updating our 2018 Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) to include a focus on floodplain management. We have contracted Fairweather Science, LLC to facilitate and guide the Planning Team through the update process.

Once completed, the Town will adopt the Hazard Mitigation and Floodplain Management Plan (HM&FMP) and it will be submitted to the State of Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA) and then to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for final review and approval. Once the adopted plan is approved by FEMA, the Town will be eligible to apply for grant funding to protect Coventry's assets from natural hazards.

For more information about mitigation planning, please see FEMA guidance here: https://www.fema.gov/emergency-managers/risk-management/hazard-mitigation-planning/regulations-guidance.

The HMP will:
1. Describe natural hazards that occur in Coventry.
2. Identify the assets (people and facilities {infrastructure}) within Coventry that are at risk from natural hazards.
3. Identify and prioritize projects to mitigate the potential damages to infrastructure.

The purpose of this plan is to inform our community of the vulnerabilities to natural hazards; better plan development within Coventry; identify projects to reduce or eliminate risk from natural hazards; and enable the Town to be eligible to apply for grant funding. Those projects prioritized will be pursued for implementation.

While this plan will be updated using the most current scientific information, it is a FEMA requirement that the public be provided the opportunity to provide input. The results of this survey will be provided to the Planning Team to review prior to the Plan finalization. Specifically, the Planning Team will consider suggested mitigation projects and confirmation of identified hazards and critical facilities and include any that were missed.
Documentation of the planning process and ongoing public participation is a crucial part of this project.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact the HMP Planning Team Leader, Chief Rick Heise at fheise@coventrypd.org or our contractor, Laura Young at laura.young@fairweather.com.
