The Flemish Expert Center on Accessibility Enter aims to enhance mobility options for persons with reduced mobility by improving accessibility of transport options in Flanders. The Flemish Government is taking important steps to establish a more accessible, complementary and integrated Flemish transport system covering the whole region, for both accessible public transport as well as adapted door-to-door transport. The introduction of Mobility Centers for Adapted Transport to help attain this goal is currently being studied.
A Mobility Center for Adapted Transport is at the conceptual level a neutral agency for the screening of the transport needs of a person with reduced mobility. The actual transport request is subsequently attributed to the most appropriate transport service. Public transport is to be considered as the first option. Should public transport not be able to meet specific user needs, the request has to be transferred to the most fitting option of the variety of adapted transport services, from voluntary initiatives to taxi companies. The concept of the Mobility Center for Adapted Transport is being tested at present in all five Flemish provinces.
In order to bring recent developments to the public attention, Enter will organize the conference ‘Good Practice in Accessible Transport for Persons with Reduced Mobility – Flanders in Europe’ on October 13th 2014, with the support of the Department for Mobility and Traffic Safety Policy of the Flemish Ministry for Mobility and Public Works.
This conference will serve a double purpose. We will present the current situation of accessible mobility in Flanders. We would also like to broaden our perspective by evaluating where our region situates itself in relation to European benchmarks by taking a closer look at existing initiatives. This way we can find mutual inspiration in good practice at home and abroad.
The examples of good practice in the conference will be grouped by four main themes:
- Information services
- Accessible public transport (including stops/stations)
- Operational en strategic transport management
- Mobility and Public Welfare and Healthcare collaboration
You'll find a link to more information about the conference themes in the form below.
