Leveraging diversity is critical to the success of the organization both in terms of its mandate and in terms of its internal administration.  Without staff consistently embracing attitudes of dignity and respect towards one another, leveraging its internal diversity becomes almost impossible.  However, when civility is present in the workplace, the workplace becomes a vibrant, healthy and rewarding place to work. Civility is the cornerstone in promoting robust decision-making by fostering dialogue that challenges ideas but not people.  This “hard on ideas, soft on people” approach is a key maxim underlying the approach of this initiative.  This workshop aims to illustrate a new dynamic of workplace interactions, provide participants with a language to describe this dynamic, shift mindsets towards civility and provide participants with a concrete set of tools and methodologies for doing so.

The workshop contains four parts. After a brief introduction, the workshop first focuses on the connection between dignity and civility in the workplace. Next, the workshop explores how communication enhances or undermines dignity.  Finally, the last session invites participants to brainstorm how to build communities that support the notion of dignity.

More specifically, the workshop will focus on the following topics:

·       The alignment of the ideal of dignity with daily management practices;
·       The development conflict management skills that allow participants to be hard on ideas but soft on people;
·       A shared highest common denominator among all peoples related to the ideal of dignity;
·       How self-awareness, both individually and collectively, can promote dignity;
·       The ten essential elements that compose our sense of dignity;
·       How both perceived or actual violations of dignity can lead to a negatively reinforcing cycle of behavior;
·       How civility becomes the implementing behavior of the attitude of dignity;
·       The links between community and dignity.
