We’re also paying close attention to the impacts of a rapidly changing environment. Everything we do is about one fundamental goal: a better, fairer, healthier world, with no-one left behind. Why is global health equity important to you? At Burnet, our team is dedicated to creating a healthier world where everyone—regardless of status, location, or background—has access to transformative research and health programs. We are committed to tackling the world's most pressing global diseases, including malaria, TB, COVID, and HIV, and finding practical solutions that make a real difference. Can you tell us why finding solutions to infectious diseases is important to you? I’m worried that infectious diseases could affect my own health and wellbeing I’ve been personally affected by infectious disease, and I don’t like seeing other people sick It’s not fair that so many people in developing countries experience suffering and death from disease when other countries don’t We’ve seen the impact of COVID-19 on the world. I don’t want that to happen again. I have another reason I’ll share with you OK Question Title * 5. In Papua New Guinea, women sadly face a significantly higher risk of dying during childbirth - 35 times higher risk compared to Australia - with only 50% having access to a skilled birth attendant. At Burnet, a crucial focus of our work is not only helping women and babies survive but also empowering them to thrive. Can you tell us what motivates you to support this area of our work? I have travelled to countries and seen health disparities and lack of resources I have seen first-hand how maternal health and wellbeing impacts not just the family, but the whole community, even in countries such as Australia No woman should die or lose their baby during childbirth in this day and age All children deserve to be born with the same chances of living a healthy life In my own words OK Question Title * 6. We are in the planning stages of a campaign to help women and children survive and thrive. We’re inviting a small group of supporters to contribute special gifts over $1,000, which will be pooled together to match donations from other donors throughout the campaign. These matching gifts inspire others to donate too. Do you think you could be in a position to make a special donation of $1000 or more to participate in our matching funds campaign? Yes, I’d like to help inspire other donors, please contact me Perhaps. I’d like more information before I decide, please contact me Not this year, maybe a little later Not at this level, but I know every bit helps and I may support the campaign with a donation I’m comfortable with Not now thank you OK Question Title * 7. Discovery research seeks to answer basic questions about how biological processes work and what causes disease. This type of research requires significant time and money. What we find often helps to make new ways to diagnose, prevent or treat disease. For example, we have recently discovered a groundbreaking antibody technology that makes our immune response 100 times more potent, potentially revolutionising treatments for cancer, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, and infectious diseases. Why do you think biomedical research, such as Burnet’s antibody research, is so important? I have been affected by disease and I’d like to find better treatments as soon as possible I understand discovery research takes time and investment but is essential to diagnosing and treating disease I know the research world from experience and appreciate that basic research is fundamental to progressing better health New discoveries can impact millions of people In my words OK Question Title * 8. Right now, Burnet Institute has innovative research projects such as the antibody technology mentioned above, which could potentially transform health outcomes. We take pride in our commitment to transforming powerful ideas into market-ready solutions. Some require early ‘seed funding’ to get through the “proof of concept” stage and attract the attention of larger funding options and potential commercial partners. We seek a group of visionary supporters in a position to make substantial contributions to these groundbreaking projects. Without knowing your personal financial situation, in the next six months, do you think you could be in a position to make a special donation of $5000 or more to a special project such as the above? Yes, I’d like to consider a special project proposal which gives more detail Maybe. It depends on when. Please contact me. Not this year, but maybe next year I’m not able to at that level, but I know that every dollar makes a difference, so I’d prefer to make a donation I’m comfortable with Not now, thank you OK Question Title * 9.
