The Canadian Institutes of Health Research – Institute of Cancer Research (CIHR-ICR) launched its Research Priority Plan 2024-2029 – Amplifying Impact: Leveraging Cancer Research to Enhance the Health of Canadians in early 2024. CIHR-ICR is now establishing research themes for its second priority of “Mitigating Treatment Toxicities to Improve Cancer Survivorship” in order to achieve a deeper understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying the development of late and long-term toxicities in cancer survivors.

There is a significant research gap as to why cancer patients develop late toxicities of their treatments, who will develop them, and to what extent. By gaining greater biological insights into their underlying mechanisms, we aim to develop predictive biomarkers to identify at-risk patients, with a view towards mitigating, and even preventing such late toxicities.

Bringing Biology to Cancer Survivorship Workshop

CIHR-ICR will host a Workshop on March 31 - April 1, 2025 in Vancouver, BC to bring together interdisciplinary researchers and people with lived and living experience (PWLLE) to help inform research priorities on this topic. The Workshop will feature a combination of short presentations and interactive discussion groups, designed to prioritize key research areas and foster interdisciplinary collaborations.

Existing cancer survivorship researchers (e.g., population and public health researchers, epidemiologists, psychosocial researchers) and those from other disciplines (e.g., biologists, immunologists, geneticists, and others) who are new to this field are strongly encouraged to attend.

If you are interested in participating in this Workshop, please complete this survey by February 3, 2025.

Completing this survey does not guarantee participation in the Workshop. CIHR-ICR is committed to fostering equitable and inclusive participation, and will ensure a balanced representation of expertise, geography, and EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) considerations. Those selected will be notified directly by CIHR-ICR; CIHR-ICR will cover the associated costs of travel and accommodation for Workshop participants. Further details will be provided to selected participants.

Survey responses will be kept confidential and stored securely. If you have any questions, please contact CIHR-ICR at cihr.icr@uhn.ca.
