Background

At the end of each financial year, the Fair Work Commission (Commission) conducts a review of the national minimum wage, and the rates of pay under modern awards and transitional instruments.

The review has historically resulted in an increase to the base weekly rates of pay under modern awards, and takes effect from the first full pay period on or after 1 July. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, increases in the retail sector did not take effect until 1 February 2021.

The Commission has announced the timetable for the 2020 – 2021 Annual Wage Review, and has issued a call for submissions.

The National Retail Association (NRA) as Australia’s largest and most representative association for the retail and fast food industries, intends to make submissions to the Commission as part of this process on the impact of the review on retailers.
