What is the study about and why is it being done?
The purpose of this correlational study is to examine the influence of the leadership style and personality traits of music ensemble directors on the retention of students in their programs. The study will examine the natural relationship between the music ensemble directors' leadership style and personality traits with the music ensemble retention in their programs over a five-year period.

What will happen if you take part in this study?
If you agree to be in this study, I will ask you to do the following:
1. Based on the results of demographics and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, a diverse sample of music ensemble directors will be identified to continue in the study. If chosen to be part of this purposive study sample, participants will be provided a link to complete the NEO-PI-3 Personality Assessment. (40 minutes)

How could you or others benefit from this study?
Participants should not expect to receive a direct benefit from participating in this study.

Benefits to society include furthering research and advancing advocacy for music ensembles, which serve as a strong public relations aspect of schools and their communities. Increasing these opportunities for future students is vital to providing a well-rounded education for our country's children. Providing data and potential strategies to teachers that might foster greater growth in their music programs is in the best interest of the student, school, and community. School districts find data compelling. This study provides a basis for changes to higher education music curriculum and in-service teacher professional development that help directors recruit and retain students in their music ensemble programs.
What risks might you experience from being in this study?
The expected risks from participating in this study are minimal, which means they are equal to the risks you would encounter in everyday life. The risks involved in this study include information risks, psychological or emotional risks, and social risks. To reduce risk, all information will be kept confidential and secured in a password-protected personal computer in a home office environment. I will monitor participants and discontinue their participation in the study if needed.

How will personal information be protected?
The records of this study will be kept private. Published reports will not include any information that could identify a subject.
· Participant responses will be kept confidential by replacing names with pseudonyms.
· Research records will be stored securely, and only the researcher will have access to them.
· Data will be stored on a password-locked computer in a locked home office, and in a locked filing system. After five years, all electronic records will be deleted, and all hardcopy records will be shredded.
