Description & Requirements
Role Description: As a junior instructor, you will assist with camp operations during the camp session you attend. The role will vary some depending on which camp session you attend, but there are some responsibilities that are consistent throughout. - Assist with bird hikes, boat trips, and other programming as needed
- Interact with campers in a friendly and positive way and contribute to the overall camp community.
- Maintain E-Bird checklists during bird walks that will be shared with the entire camp
- Co-lead early morning bird walks
- Organize the 'Mystery of the Day Competition'. The Mystery of the Day is a daily set of questions about some natural phenomena created by the instructors. Campers receive points for correct answers AND creative answers, and the person with the most points at the end of the week wins a prize. The intern instructor will be responsible for collecting and tallying correct answers throughout the week, determining the competition winner, and presenting the awards on the last night of camp.
- Create a Weekly Wrap Up post for Hog Island social media with 2-3 pictures from the week and a caption that describes highlights from the camp session
Eligibility: Open to any early career naturalist, bird guide, or environmental educator. This position supports the Hog Island Audubon Camp faculty and staff. Build your resume while being mentored by world renowned ornithologists, authors, and bird guides.
Timeline: The deadline to apply is January 31, 2025. Selection of Jr. Instructors will be announced no later than March 1, 2024. All applicants must be 18 years old to apply and have completed high school by the summer of 2025.
Compensation: A stipend of $650 will be paid upon completion. Room and board while at Hog Island are also included. Junior Instructors must provide their own transportation to and from camp.
Requirements: A completed application and a one-page personal narrative.
