Do you have a tale of growing up, living, visiting or working in Burnie?

As part of the refurbishment of the Burnie Arts and Function Centre, Burnie City Council, invite you to share your story about life in Burnie.

For example, did you or your family compete in a local sporting event of note, work for one of the major local industries, or have a memory specific to the Arts and Function Centre? Or maybe you or your family:
  • have strong memories of attending a local church or local church events?
  • have fond memories of attending the Burnie theatre?
  • took part in the Shirley Temple Competition in the 1930s?
  • have a memorable story from a Burnie Show?
  • have stories from your connections to Associated Pulp and Paper Mills Ltd. or one of the other major factories or producers in the area?
  • have stories associated with a local club or organisation such as the Burnie Surf Lifesaving Club , the Country Women's Association or similar? 
  • participated in hosting or witnessed dignitaries visiting Burnie? 
  • have connections and stories associated with particular cultural or advocacy groups or events (i.e migrant community, First Nations, LGBTQIA+, etc)?
  • have stories or ties to local shipping or railway operations?
  • have stories linked to local landscapes, landmarks or buildings?
The information gathered here will be collated and shared with council and museum staff for potential future exhibitions and associated digital content.

  • Hobart Savings Bank Glass 
    This item is believed to date from when the bank was located on the corner of Cattley Street and Mount Street 
  • Maireener Shell Necklace 
    A traditional Tasmanian Aboriginal shell necklace made of green maireener shells.
  • Titan Sign – ATP 
    Signage associated with titanium pigments produced by Australian Titan Products.  
  • Thylacine Pelt  
    This pelt if from a Thylacine snared by Walter Barwick on a property in the Upper Esk, in 1905. A notch in the left shoulder indicates that the bounty of 1 pound had been paid. The pelt was donated to Peter Mercer’s Pet Falls Museum in 1963.  
  • Kaps Grand Piano  
    This 7-foot grand piano was manufactured by Ernest Kaps in Dresden, Germany, in 1883-4. The piano was donated by Mrs W.J. Campbell in memory of her husband Mr W.J. Campbell for use in the Civic Centre. It was previously used in the Menai Hotel.  
  • Burnie Town Hall Clock  
    The original Town Hall clock, installed in 1913. This clock was removed in 1976 and restored in the 1990s by local horologist Phil Howard. The clock was on display in the Burnie Makers’ Workshop until its closure.

  • Bundy Clock  
    This Item is a mechanical time clock that uses a timecard to record the arrival and departure of employees at the start and end of their assigned shift at the Associated Pulp and Paper Mills (APPM).
  • Time-card Holder 
    This item was used to hold timecards for APPM staff. 
  • Power Supply Panel 
    This panel was used within the APPM to determine power supply to critical infrastructure associated with the raw material processing during the paper making. 
  • Locomotive Builders Plate 
    This builder’s plate once adorned a Class 10 Locomotive of the Emu Bay Railway. 
  • Locomotive Name Plate 
    This item once adorned the No.3 Locomotive of the Emu Bay Railway.
  • EBR Journal Cover  
    This item once was a cover to an EBR locomotive axle bearing box.
