TITLE: English, it is A-Changing: Dealing with Language in the Classroom in the Age of Social Media

DATE: April 13 & 20, 2016

LOCATION: Montclair State University-University Hall, ADP Center Room 1142

TIME: 8:30 AM-3:30 PM

INSTRUCTOR: Alice F. Freed, Ph.D.

The English language, like all languages, has a long tradition of change. But our language seems to be changing faster than ever in this age of social media, 30-second sound bites, tweets, texts, and with a future that promises to include a boundless stream of new technologies. What should we as educators do with the new ways that our students are using English? Should we correct their way of speaking and writing? Should we change our own standards? Is the variety of English that we consider correct today the same as the language that was viewed as standard or correct even a decade ago? How can we make use of what our students themselves know about their language and turn this into a learning advantage? This pair of seminars addresses these questions from a linguist’s perspective and attempts to arrive at some practical solutions and suggestions.
