Japanese American Community Scanning Days

The Washington State History Museum is seeking materials including letters, photographs, pamphlets, diaries, and flyers about the Japanese American experience in Washington State for possible use in future exhibitions, educational materials, or digital web-based media. The first of these exhibitions will be displayed for 6-10 years. Our intention in curating this exhibition is to tell the story of the events leading up to the issuance of Executive Order 9066, what happened immediately as a result to communities across the state, and where people went as well as how it impacted what our communities looked like after WWII through today.

Community Scanning Days will be held at the Washington State History Museum in downtown Tacoma on Thursday, August 15 and Thursday, September 19, 2019 from 3-7pm. Please sign up for the best date and time and you will receive a confirmation email.  Please also describe your materials to the best of your ability. Be prepared to bring up to 5 items. We may seek to set up additional times with you depending on the size of the collection you would like to share.

For your contributions, you will receive a 2GB thumb drive with your scanned digital content as well as archival envelopes and folders to store your materials. WSHS will also provide you with resources about best practices for storing your collection items.
