Of all the symbols that define historic Route 66, perhaps the most enduring are the classic neon signs lining Central Avenue.
In preparation for the Centennial of Route 66 in 2026, the City of Albuquerque is planning to add an iconic neon sign to East Central Avenue, just west of Tramway. This “must stop” attraction will welcome visitors to the city and create a sense of place in The East Gateway for many years to come.
The project is part of the Route 66 Action Plan, The East Gateway Metropolitan Redevelopment Area Plan, and the Route 66 Centennial Celebration Action Plan. It was made possible by a $328,000 Destination Forward grant from the New Mexico Department of Tourism.
