PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
You are being asked to take part in a research study. Before you decide to participate in this study, it is important that you understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please read the following information carefully. Please ask the researcher if there is anything that is not clear or if you need more information. Your participation is completely voluntary, and you may withdraw from the study at any point.
The purpose of this study is to explore the possible psychological, emotional, and interpersonal reactions of being exposed to discrimination. The central focus of this study is to examine if there is a correlation between exposure to racism as manifested by exposure to discrimination and post-traumatic stress disorder and/or complex posttraumatic stress disorder. A secondary area of inquiry is to examine if there is a correlation between exposure to racism or discrimination and traditional types of traumatic experiences.
STUDY PROCEDURES
Participation in this study involves filling out an online questionnaire asking about possible exposure to discrimination and the possible emotional, behavioral, or interpersonal responses to those experiences. You will be asked to fill out an online survey consisting of a form to gather demographic information and four psycho-social assessment measures. The demographic questions ask about your age, race/ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, as well as your educational and economic status. Identifying information, such as your name or address, will not be collected. The four psycho-social assessment measures include the Everyday Discrimination Scale, The Life Experiences Checklist for the DSM-5, The PTSD Checklist for the DSM-5, and the International Trauma Questionnaire and are designed to gather information about your possible exposure to discrimination, stressful or traumatic events across your life, and your behavioral, emotional, and interpersonal reactions to such experiences.
Your participation is completely voluntary. You may choose not to answer any specific question or questions that make you feel uncomfortable, and you may withdraw from the study at any point. Answering the questions in the online form will take about 30 minutes of your time.
