Introduction

Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to participate in SBCTC’s Learner Experiences and Needs Survey. The insights you share about your educational journey, career ambitions, and the life challenges you face will help us better understand the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and aspirations of community and technical college students in Washington State. We’re also interested in learning about your interest in quick-to-earn credentials designed to help students gain specific skills and knowledge that directly apply to their career goals.

Directions: The survey consists of 23 questions and should take 20-25 minutes to complete. There are optional comment boxes on most questions where you can add your unique perspective. Please do not answer any questions you feel uncomfortable answering. Your responses will be confidential but not anonymous.

Data Use: The data collected from this survey will be aggregated and used to draft detailed learner personas that reflect the needs of students attending community and technical colleges in Washington. These personas will help guide development of career-relevant and employer-valued credentials designed to support students' education, career, and life goals.

Thank you for your time! Your feedback is invaluable, and we are committed to using it to create improved learning opportunities and career support resources for students.

Question Title

* 20. Definition: A micro-credential is a bite-sized learning opportunity designed to help you gain employer-valued knowledge, skills, or abilities in a year or less. Micro-credentials are offered in flexible learning formats and have standalone value. They can typically be combined/stacked to count toward credit in a certificate or degree program.
  • Example: A Health IT micro-credential teaches foundational IT skills, customer service skills, and gives students exposure to the leading electronic health record system in the country. A CompTIA A+ certification prepares students for technical support and IT operational roles. Earning both micro-credentials takes 9 months, and the program is offered online. The credentials can be stacked together to complete a Health IT Certificate co-designed with leading regional healthcare employers to prepare students for careers as IT professionals in a medical center or hospital setting.

If your college offered micro-credentials, would you be interested in earning one to gain new skills or add to your existing skill set?
