Open to children in Year 2 or older.

We would like to invite your child to join our 2019 Training Band.

Training Band Information and Cost

Participation in the school Training Band is a great opportunity for children to enjoy music in the company of others and experience the type of discipline that is required to work as a team.  By Term 4, 2019 your child will transition to the school band.

Each child will need to purchase or hire their own instrument directly from a music shop (not via the school). We will assist parents to find suitable instruments to hire or purchase. The instruments available to training band members are: flute, clarinet, percussion, saxophone, trombone, Euphonium, and trumpet.

Band members are required to attend a tutorial with a music teacher each week for their allocated instrument. The school can assist with finding suitable tutors. Tuition is usually outside of school hours, and limited places will be available for tuition during school hours. Beginner band rehearsals will start in Term 2 when the children have had 1 term to learn their instruments. Training band rehearsals (Terms 2 and 3) will most likely be before school, Wednesday morning 8am (to be confirmed). Senior band rehearsals (Term 4) will most likely be before school, Tuesday morning 7:50am (to be confirmed).

The cost estimate for 2019 indicates the financial commitment involved:

1) Band Fees (payable to the music committee) $130 per half year ($260 per year total)
2) Instrument Hire (payable to the instrument shop)* $90 – 180 per term ($360 - $720/ year)
3) Tuition (20-30 minutes, payable to the tutor) $25-$40 / week ($1000 - $1600/year)
4) Total cost per year $1,620 - $2,580 / year

* alternatively, Instrument purchase is $600 - $1700 depending on the instrument

Training Band Try-out

If your child is interested in the Training Band programme, there will be a try-out on Friday morning 16th November at 9am. $5/child will be charged for this to cover the cost of new reeds and alcohol wipes. During this time, music teachers will let your child try playing their preferred instrument(s) to determine which instrument is best for your child to learn. They do not need any previous experience with an instrument. A note will be sent home soon after informing you of the result of the try-out.  Those children who already own an instrument should still attend the try-out to confirm that this instrument is suitable.

Participating in the try-out is not a commitment to the band. Once your child is allocated an instrument and offered a position in the 2019 band, you will need to make a firm commitment (with $50 deposit) whether to accept or decline the position.

This form is due back by Wednesday 14th November. Instrument try outs will occur on Friday 16th November.  Please complete this online form.

We look forward to welcoming your child to the West Ryde Public School Band.
