The AI in Primary Schools study aims to better understand the current perceptions and use of generative AI tools in primary schools among teachers and students in Aotearoa New Zealand.

It also explores equity, ethics, future opportunities and challenges related to AI in primary school education.

The survey is voluntary, confidential and anonymous. No schools or individuals will be named or otherwise identifiable in any reports that we write.

For the purpose of this survey, Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to tools that use advanced algorithms to assist with teaching and learning. This includes:
  • content generation (e.g., creating lesson plans, custom research on demand);
  • complex task automation (e.g., grading and providing feedback);
  • adaptive support (e.g., personalising student learning experiences or offering language assistance).
Examples include tools like ChatGPT for generating text, image creation tools like DALL·E, automated grading systems, and virtual assistants.
